Ambali assures staff on 2015 promotion exercise

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has assured the University staff that the 2015 promotion exercise would be conducted and concluded on schedule despite seeming delay in the process. Prof. Ambali gave the assurance last Friday (September 4, 2015) through the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, who represented him at the closing ceremony of the training programme for the University technologists. More than 80 Technologists I and II participated in the two-week programme. “ I can assure you, even if it is two days to the October 1st effective date for promotion, we shall conclude the process”, the Registrar said while responding to questions from the participants. He added, “This administration is committed to career development of staff. On-going efforts are to emphasise training and re-training of staff, to increase productivity and efficiency”. While noting that the Vice-Chancellor has said several times that he is committed to sustaining excellence that this university is known for and the academic stability culture that we have been achieving for several years, Mr. Obafemi added that he, as the Registrar, has no choice but to support the Vice-Chancellor to achieve these noble objectives. He urged member of staff to play their own part, saying, “I will just appeal to those due for promotion this year to be steady because our procedure will remain very thorough but faster”. Earlier in his paper entitled, “Administrative Protocol”, the Registrar had called attention to critical sections of the new Condition of Service particularly the line of communication and university organogram. He advised staff to always respect and honour their immediate superior officers, no matter how connected, brilliant or skillful they may be. “Don't slight your immediate bosses. If you do, when you need them, you may not get help”, he stressed, adding that “if you need to see the Unit Head, say the Chief Technologist or Senior Technologist as the case may be, approach senior officers ahead of you. Take their inputs, even if verbally, it may help”. The Registrar further explained that “before administrative protocol can be defined, there has to be an established organogram”, addting that “in this university, our organogram is a top-bottom (in terms of instructions) and bottom-top (in terms of reporting). It shows layers of officers saddled with varying degrees of responsibilities and assignments”. “This is why it is dangerous to jump protocols in reporting or requesting for assistance because of private contacts and connections. If you do that, you create disaffection and enmity between yourself and your immediate bosses and expose yourself to others as someone without decorum” , he said. Mr. Obafemi further counseled that, “what God will make of you, He will. However, He will not jump down from heaven physically because of anyone. It is the people He has put around you that He will use. So, don't complain that you are the only one being used by your boss. May be he has seen a potential in you he wants to showcase”. The Register also admonished the Unit Heads to try others. “Whatever the situation, nobody is absolutely useless and nobody is indispensable. What if he is sick?, he asked, adding that “let people make mistakes and learn. In the Registry, I can go to sleep. I have no problem. There was a time I was away for three weeks, no single panic moment because people know what they should do. We had spent much time on training and re-training ourselves”. “I don't want a situation whereby my absence will create confusion or stagnancy. Life must go on. Very soon, everybody will move a step forward and more people will join. However, I am not saying you should become irrelevant. No! But develop a system that works with or without your physical presence”, he further said. Cautioning staff against god-fatherism, the Registrar noted that “positions in the University are tenured and temporal. Some last for two years others for five. However, your career will span decades. Why then hurt your future”, he queried, advising staff to “be dedicated to their jobs since no godfather will be happy to help a godson with poor report of truancy, lateness, insubordination, inefficiency, and poor behavioural attitude. Remember godfathers can help secure jobs but will not help do the work”. Mr. Obafemi then charged the Technologists, “Now that you know the university organogram, now that you know the defined channel of communication, let it not be said of you that you are breaking the rules”. Certificates of attendance were presented to the participants during the event that was witnessed by the Deputy Director, Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT), Dr. J.A. Bamiduro; the Chairman, National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), University of Ilorin Chapter, Mr. P. A. Oddiah; the Chairman, Training of Technologists Committee, Mr. Israel Babatope Adewole and others who served as resources persons like Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, Dr M. K. Bello, Mrs V. Awopetu and Mr. J. O. Oyetunji.
